Bheru Singh Chouhan and Nanuram Sanweriya are cousins and form the backbone of the mandali that specializes in singing Bhajans of Kabir, Mira, Dharmdas and other mystic saint poets. Bheru Singh's father was part of a mandali that Bheru Singh himself wasn't initially interested in. He says that he preferred listening to film songs as a child. Then once he started playing the manjeera along with his father's Mandali and slowly the music grew on him, so much so, that now this music is his real life, even though his living is earned from a sarkari job as assistant to a veterinary doctor in the Pashu Swasthya Vibhag (Animal Health department) in his district. Nanuram used to play a woman's role (it is customary for men to play women's roles) in a group that performed the Teja Ji Ki Katha that is very popular in the area, and that was his initiation into music. Today, theirs is one of the most popular Mandalis or groups in the area and they have several cassettes and VCD albums available in the local market, apart from performing for AIR and private programs. |
