Dhola
is a short form of 'Dhola ka Panvara', popular in the
Braj speaking areas of Western UP and Eastern Rajasthan.
In Rajasthan it is commonly known as the tale of 'Dhola
- Maaru'.
It is the tale of a place called Narvar where the King
of 'Pingal' reached after a famine in his own land. The
king of Narvar, 'Nal' married his daughter 'Marvan' to
the Pingal king's son Dhola while they were still children.
The saga is about 'Marvan' search for her husband 'Dhola'
who was too young at the time of his marriage to remember
her. Dhola is usually sung in the monsoon months to the
accompaniment of an instrument called 'Chikara', a Dholak,
and a Manjeera.
