The
word Bair means dispute. Also known as Bhagnaul, this
is a form of singing in the Kumaon region. In singing
Bair - singers have a debate with each other. One asks
a question, the other answers and asks another question.
And so it goes till one or the other accepts defeat. Usually
these competitions are organized in festivals and fairs.
Big crowds gather to hear it.
There is no restriction in the subjects the singers can
pick up for the debate but the content of this form remains
argumentative.
