Hudka is a drum and Baul means work, and so Hudkibaul are the
songs sung while working.
There is a tradition of singing while working in the fields.
Some of the work is done by men and some only by women
- such as sowing the paddy. These songs are sung specially
during paddy sowing. A main singer sings with his hudka
while all the men or women repeat after him.
The singing consists of initial prayers and usually long
tales of valor though other songs are also sung in the
middle.
Field labour on the slopes of the Kumaon hills is tough-
and these songs act as relief and help to complete the
work faster.
