Kabir, born in 1398 AD, is said to have lived over a 100 years. He is perhaps the most quoted poet to have lived in the country. " Kahat Kabir " or 'says Kabir' is a signature that became so popular that it is no longer definitely known whether the lines preceding them were written by Kabir or by a follower to pay respect to the great man. He was brought up by a weaver couple and used the simplest metaphors in his poetry to convey deep philosophy. Kabir stood firmly against all discrimination on the basis of caste and creed and it is no wonder that he has deep respect among followers of different religions, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and all others. There are sects, the "Kabir Panth" that consists of followers of Kabir's philosophy. Many of his verses are part of the Holy text of the Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib and there are countless verses that are sung by individuals and groups across the country.
