The Songs
Janmashtmi is
celebrated on the 8th day of the month of Bhadon. This is the day
Lord Krishna was born in a jail in the city of Mathura. Temples
accross the country organize very special celebrations with music,
dance and "Jhankis"; scenes depicting the life of Krishna. Believers
fast the whole day and eat only at midnight, after the distribution
of "prasad", food blessed by the God.
It is said that the
creator, Lord Vishnu took birth in the form of Krishna to rid the
earth of all evil. His life is very colourful as depicted in the
religious texts. There are many faces of Lord Krishna that are seen
in texts and folk songs. A mischievous child who stole butter and
curd, a romantic young man who was paired with Radha though he never
married her, and a philospher who advised Arjuna before the
Mahabharata war are some of the most often seen
depictions..
